Under beautiful sunny skies 33 boats sailed in the 2004 Lake George Open J/22 Regatta at The Lake George Club in Diamond Point, New York. Boats came from as far away as Cleveland Heights, Ohio and Ontario, Canada to round out the fleet on September 25th and 26th.
After an absolutely flat day on Friday that had the race chairman a little worried we arrived at the club on Saturday to find a steady 8- to 10-knot breeze out of the south that held all day. A great day of racing right in front of the club (spectators love this venue) found Cory Sertl from Rochester, NY with her husband Mark Sertl and Rick Egloff in front with 1, 5, 1, 3 for 10 points closely followed by Chris Doyle, Bruce Mathews and Mike DeDario with 3, 1, 2, 7 for 13 points. Kirk Reynolds from Rochester (2, 12, 4, 4) and Bob Seidel from Cleveland (11, 4, 5, 2) were tied for third with 22 points. Chris’ brother Peter Doyle (9, 7, 6, 1) was close behind in fifth with 23 points. Top local boats at the end of day one were Bill Dutcher, Ed Gardner, and Tom Linville in 10th, 11th, and 12th.
Saturday night compounded the challenge with a dinner dance / party that went well into the early morning hours. However at 12:30 am the only people left on the dance floor were race committee chairman Rodger Voss and his wife Diana as the contestants were already sleeping the night away in preparation for day two. Yeah, right! Our visitors always like to visit all of the local “sites” when they are here, and Lake George has lots to choose from late into the night.
Sunday dawned with a challenge for both the race committee and the contestants. The first race was held in 5 to 6 knots, out of the east north east which became very shifty and spotty, forcing the RC to change course halfway through. Kirk Reynolds and Tom Linville found the “proper course” and finished 1 - 2. Cory Sertl had some bad luck but closed to finish fifth, just behind Chris Doyle in fourth. The RC decided to start a sixth race in the dying (dead?) air, which unfortunately left the competitors befuddled and praying for good luck. “Bandit,” from nearby Sacandaga Reservoir, sailed by Bill Metz, escaped the starting line with everyone else just trying to get across, and stole the race with a “horizon job.” Only Rik Alexanderson of the local fleet also got away from the mess and finished second. Everyone else struggled all the way around a short course, including an embarassing 20-boat pileup at the one leeward mark. Fortunately, everyone had the courtesy to not protest the “incidental contacts.” But the air was blue around the mark for at least an hour. The fleet retired for a fantastic hot lunch served on the terrace of the club house. Places change a little with Chris Doyle, Bruce Mathews and Mike DeDario from Youngstown, NY emerging in first, Cory Sertl, Mark Sertl and Rick Egloff in second followed by Peter Doyle, Pat Whalen and Amy Renolds in third. Awards went to the top five boats with Kirk Reynolds, Jon Faudree and Doug Burtner in fourth and Jed Hoffer, Monty Aitken and Alex Sible in fifth. Best Local Boat finish went to Bill Dutcher, Joe Gennon and Chris Connelly in eighth place.
A tradition at the Open is to pick a place out of the hat on Saturday night at the dinner and award the “Grab Bag” prize for the boat that finishes in that position. This year's award went to 25th place, Spike Kunz, Kathryn Thyne and Pete Casper from Lake George.
Breakfast lunch and dinner were served on the terrace Saturday and Sunday keeping the sailors well fed and in good spirits (lots of spirits on Saturday night too) rounding out a great weekend enjoyed by all who were there. We thank Haarstick Sailmakers with participants Doug Burtner and Jon Faudree for helping sponsor the regatta by donating regatta folders to each boat and free beer on Saturday night. And we especially thank those who came to Lake George for the first time, some driving a significant distance. We hope their overall experience was “the best,” and they will return and encourage others to participate in this excellent event. We hope to see everyone again next year — and maybe some new competitors. Mark your calendars for September 24 & 25, 2005!
